Farm Series Part 6 [Stuck]

Winter was coming. The crops were in and the weather continued to grow colder every day.

The crop side of farming consisted now only of hauling the corn and soy to the grain elevator. But the cattle side of farming never stopped.

The cows had been brought in from their Summer pastures and taken to a more enclosed area that was closer to the farmers own home. Being able to take care of and quickly access the cows during the cold dreary months of Winter was essential to keeping the herd healthy and happy.

Calving season was finally over but there was always something to do and and always someone getting into trouble.

This particular time happened to involve one of the 4 month old calves.

"Hope, come look at this." The farmer was out of breath as he had rushed from the barn lot into the cozy old farmhome. "What could it be this time?" Thought Hope as she quickly pulled on her boots knowing that Winter in Indiana equaled rain and rain created loads of mud something she was used to hearing her handsome farmer complained about on the daily.

They hurried out into the barnyard. Clay escorted Hope towards the large hay feeder, full of hay, that was left out in the large holding area for the cows to munch on whenever they had the mind to, which was always.

He pointed to the feeder and Hope let out a gasp, "Oh my! How did that possibly happen??" Hope looked at Clay for some answer because of all things a calf could, would, or can get stuck in this one was a first.

Clay shook his head and said, "I have no idea how a calf could find a way to get stuck in between the bars on the inside of the hay feeder. I've tried several times to get him out but he won't budge and he is starting to wear out so I better think of something quick, I don't want to lose him!"

Hope could see how Clay had been having trouble getting the calf out. She just couldn't understand how that dumb bull got in that predicament in the first place!

"I think the only way is to cut the bars of the feeder," said Clay. "Otherwise I just know if we ever did get him out any other way he would go right back to that place to get stuck again."

Hope knew he was right.

Clay got all the equipment he needed as Hope headed back to the house to check on the kids.

"Animals will always keep you on your toes." Hope shook her head as she walked back to the old farmhouse.
